Building Healthy Families: Why Getting Active Starts With Us
We’ve all heard (and probably said) that “kids today are different.” And of course, they are — they’ve grown up in a completely different world. While technology, medicine, and science have given this generation incredible advantages, they’ve also created challenges we can’t ignore.
One of the biggest? Our kids are moving less and gaining more weight, and their health is paying the price — both now and later in life.
It’s easy to blame the school system, fast food marketing, or the lure of social media, but when it comes down to it, our children’s most powerful role models are us — their parents.
When we point one finger, the other four point back at us.
The Reality of Australia’s Health Problem
More than 60% of Australian adults are overweight or obese, and nearly 10% fall into the severely obese category. Our children, while doing slightly better, still face worrying trends — about 25% of Australian children and adolescents are overweight or obese.
Sadly, Australia ranks as the fifth most obese country in the world, just behind the U.S., Mexico, Hungary, and New Zealand.
And no, “puppy fat” isn’t something kids simply grow out of. Childhood and adolescent obesity is strongly linked to long-term health conditions and a reduced quality of life, both physically and mentally.
The Movement Gap
Physical inactivity plays a massive role in this growing issue. Around one in four Australian children aren’t meeting the national physical activity guidelines, and the numbers worsen with age — over half of young adults (18–24) fall short of recommended activity levels.
That’s why movement matters — at every age. Building healthy habits early sets the foundation for a lifetime of strength, mobility, and wellbeing.
The Diet Dilemma
Our diets aren’t helping either. Only 7% of adults meet the Australian Dietary Guidelines for vegetable intake — meaning 93% of us aren’t eating enough veggies every day. If parents aren’t eating them, it’s likely their kids aren’t either.
Meanwhile, fast food continues to dominate family mealtimes. Australians make an astonishing 51.5 million visits to fast food outlets every month — far more than trips to local fruit and vegetable shops.
The result? Families are consuming more calories and fewer nutrients — a perfect recipe for long-term health issues.
Creating Change Starts at Home
If we’re serious about improving our children’s health, the change must start with us. The old saying “Do as I say, not as I do” simply doesn’t work. Kids learn from what they see — so if we want them to move more, eat better, and live healthier lives, we need to lead by example.
Ask yourself: Do you want your children to inherit your level of health — or a better one?
